Next week the BBC Trust will make its initial recommendation on the future of BBC3, and we will learn whether or not the BBC Trust truly stands up for viewers, or if it's simply a cheerleader for the BBC management. Almost 295,000 people have now signed up to our campaign to save the station from nearly 50% in content cuts, and from closure on our television screens. What kind of message would be sent out if they now ignored our views? If these proposals were carried out such cuts would be devastating for the creative sector and the millions of viewers that watch BBC3 every week. We only have to look at Don't Tell The Bride last night on BBC1 to see how even our favourite shows are being reformatted to suit an older, whiter, and more middle class BBC. While the show was still popular it lost some of its magic as it tries to appease the older demographic. I fear other shows will go this way, or disappear altogether. Last week ITV bosses spoke of their excitement about the possibility of BBC3 closing. The analysis for the BBC Trust shows that BBC3 leaving television will divert young audiences to rivals because we don't all want to watch TV online like the BBC thinks. The impact will mean more viewers for E4 and ITV2, and more advertising revenue for those channels to spend. ITV bosses believe new talent will also be more likely to sign up with them than the BBC because they want to see their programming on the box, not the tablet. It's not rocket science - even the BBC bosses are admitting this will happen - so why don't they stop it happening? Although next week's decision isn't final - there will be further consultation after this - it's an important moment. We must do all we can to campaign now before it's too late.
