Create Gender Neutral Bathrooms at Consentino Middle School

The Issue

Gender neutral bathrooms are beneficial for many people, and can reduce risk of harm, and create more comfort.

Firstly, they are more inclusive for trans individuals. They create an option for trans people who's gender cannot accurately be described as either just male or female. They also create a safer option for trans people who's gender can be described as male or female, but unfortunately feel unsafe using the men's or women's bathrooms because of potential harassment, physical or verbal.

Second, it can contribute to gender equality in other ways. Women's bathrooms tend to have longer lines, this is partially because of multiple factors that can cause people who use women's bathrooms to take longer on average, and partially due to men's bathrooms being more focused on historically. Having gender neutral bathrooms can help reduce gender inequality people who use the women's bathrooms may face by reducing the wait time.

People opposed to gender neutral bathrooms may be concerned that people with different genders or sexes sharing bathrooms could lead to sexual assault, or other possible forms of harassment, but multiple studies and statistics show that having trans-inclusive laws or policies regarding bathrooms has not shown increase in sexual assault or harassment. In fact, many studies show that, sadly, trans people, specifically trans women of color, have higher chances of being assaulted or harassed than cis people, mainly due to prejudice. (This is a slightly different topic, but one that definitely needs to be addressed and improved upon.)

Another reason some people are opposed to gender neutral bathrooms is for religious reasons. Peoples religious beliefs and freedoms should absolutely be respected and taken into consideration, and they should absolutely have the freedom to choose to not use gender neutral bathrooms, however, this freedom shouldn't interfere with other peoples rights to a safe and comfortable bathroom experience, and gender neutral bathrooms can play a part in that.

Finally, there is the reason that gender neutral bathrooms may make issues like paruresis worse. It is possible they may make paruresis and conditions like it worse depending on the person, however, this isn't a issue restricted to gender neutral bathrooms, but rather all bathrooms that have multiple stalls. There should definitely be more accessibility for people with this condition and similar ones, in all bathrooms. Gender neutral bathrooms do not necessarily interfere with creating this accessibility, though, and many gender neutral bathrooms are single stalled, which could actually help people with conditions like paruresis.

In summary, gender neutral bathrooms can create a faster, more comfortable experience for many people. There is no evidence that gender neutral bathrooms increase sexual assault, no one would be forced to use them if they didn't want to, and while not always helping, can help and don't necessarily impede accessibility for people with conditions like paruresis.
