Brendan Bromeley based his decision on giving PUBLIC LAND to the multi million dollar corporation AFL for $1.00 a year on just 959 people who managed to find the hidden survey! This is a disgrace!
Many of the 959 lived outside of Clarence, so how does that count? Therefore the petition will accept anyone outside of the Clarence area, but not outside of Tasmania.
Below are some of the comments from residents:
Public Again Left Out Of Site’s Discussion
While the preferred site of the new AFL high performance site has been announced, once again the public have been left out of the consultation process.
Brendan Blomeley who is the mayor of the City of Clarence, has taken it upon himself to burden rate payers with a $70 million dollar AFL training centre without any consultation. He will argue that there was a survery, yes, but it wasn't published except on the Clarence City Council website, but that little secret was hidden deeply. He claims 68% voted in favour, but did they? No they didn't.
No stadium joy
We can’t have a high performance health service, but yay, we can have a high performance AFL centre at Rosny instead.
Come on ambos, donate the tinsel you were forbidden to use on your vehicles to decorate the proposed facility.
It could be the only joy the majority of Tasmanians will get out of the stadium deal.
Residents shunned
Last week Clarence City Council threw away the wishes of the community they claim to represent by voting to provide land in Rosny for AFL training facilities, land already promised to our community for another use.
The agenda to the council meeting reveals the true potential impact of this decision, much deeper than our residents realise.
The million-dollar skate park at Rosny College, only five years old, gets removed. The tennis club by Rosny gets removed. All the usable green space, behind both Rosny College and behind Eastlands – both sides of the highway – is occupied.
The proposal has enormous groundworks which would flatten the areas, leaving the public only large, steep banks, and likely fences off and privatises every worthwhile area. The community looks to be left with unsightly retaining walls, fences, and unusable banks stripped of trees, and no access.
All this is in the development plans which were buried in the council’s meeting agenda – a shame the council doesn’t listen to it’s voters.
AFL’s hot potato
I am somewhat mystified to learn that 18 blokes and 18 women need two ovals and a purpose-built $70m State of the Art High Performance Training Centre so they can kick around a football all day long. Perhaps they intend to have a his and her oval, which seems contrary to the recently found zest the AFL has for inclusiveness when the needs of the LGBTIA+ folk need to be considered: A third oval?
My incredulity doesn’t end there. Am I to believe this super-duper, glorious temple of the gods is to be built on the people’s land at a rent of one dollar a year? And to add insult to injury we are to pay $60m to build it!
I know it’s all for a good cause and I simply can’t wait for the six matches a year the AFL Men-in-Suits deem suitable for us all to see.
What a total sham from our Mayor!!! Does he think he is dealing with the uneducated like Trump?
I suspect (though could be well be wrong) there's going to be a fresh wave of resentment aimed at the AFL (oh, and state and local gov) once it sinks in one of the best and much loved skateparks in the state is going to be bulldozed to accommodate this project. I thought the AFL was keen on attracting youth to their sport. Not entirely sure how this colonising scorched earth approach fits in with such a vision.
It's appalling how this was fast tracked and kept under the radar. Unless you scour the CCC website and check their Facebook page regularly, it will go unnoticed. I checked the FB page and almost nobody liked or commented.
Only 80% were Clarence ratepayers. I bet very few actually live in the affected suburbs of Rosny and Montagu Bay.
CCC has a population of 61,531 but Brendan Bromeley thinks that a survey of 959 is good enough to give away land and build a $70 million dollar AFL High Performance Training Centre.
Is Blundstone Arena making a profit? I doubt it and cannot see this making a profit too in the future. This will be just money thrown away.
Here is the link to the Facebook Group, which also has a post with all of the CCC's emails. Please send in as many emails as you can.
We must have this decision overturned !!
