To Endorse Latiné Student Task Force Initiative
The Issue
The Howard Thurman Center serves as Boston University's main cultural hub and a source of support for POC students. Although appreciated, students feel as if there are deficits in the resources for Latiné-identifying students. The Latiné community feels the need for more specialized resources, not just for Latiné students but for all affinity groups at BU.
The Latiné Student Task Force is a student-led group dedicated to advocating on behalf of Latiné student issues. A key focus of this petition involves the establishment of dedicated affinity-based student resource centers on campus. There are several task forces, such as the Latiné, Asian, and Black student task forces, that are currently fighting for similar missions and we stand in solidarity with them as well.
Our Latiné Student Task Force specifically aims to advocate for institutional resources and support for the unique communities, addressing the needs expressed by many of our fellow Latiné students on campus.
Many of these needs have been expressed through our climate survey, which accumulated the different experiences of students and alumni during their time at BU. These needs include but are not limited to:
1. Latiné Student Resource Center, a dedicated space for Latiné students, community, and culture to thrive
2. Centralized Website that lists resources/events for Latiné Students
3.Regular Campus Events & Programming that engage with the Latiné Community
4. University Wide Committee to promote inclusion of Latiné Students
5. Mental Health Resources/Counseling specific to the Latiné Community
6. Cultural Identity Based Housing
8. Build an inclusive campus climate by providing intersectional education, training, and resource materials focused on Latiné identities.
9. Participate in external and internal programs to evaluate, inform, and publicize BU’s inclusive practices.
10. Invest in, value, and promote Latiné scholars, scholarship, and teaching.
11. Report, recognize, and reward service to BU’s Latiné community.
12. Orientation: Take steps to ensure incoming Latiné students feel welcome as soon as they arrive at BU.
13. Provide tailored career services to help Latiné students successfully compete in academic and professional job markets and thrive after graduation.
R14. Alumni & Friends: Increase engagement and networking opportunities among Latiné alums.
