The Issue

The DEC's Caledonia hatchery has traditionally stocked Irondequoit Creek each spring with 10,000 to 14,000 hatchery raised brown trout. This stocking is to provide recreational opportunities to the many families that visit the various local parks that Irondequoit Creek flows through. The recent initiative of the DEC to discontinue the stocking and to support only wild trout inhabiting the creek will make it almost impossible for all but the most experienced anglers to catch trout. We implore the DEC to initiate a public hearing on the issue as soon as possible and to reverse this change in policy.
