The Issue

Canada's firearm laws have been a topic of intense debate and scrutiny, especially in recent years. At the heart of this issue is the blanket prohibition on certain types of firearms, including handguns, which impacts not just hobbyists and sports shooters, but also those who feel that having access to these tools would provide a means of self-defense in their place of business.

Obtaining a carrier’s license in Canada is a convoluted and onerous process that starts with legally owning a business, followed by acquiring a business class gun license, and finally applying for a carrier's license. This may sound reasonable at first, but consider a scenario where I own a gas station or a towing company in a remote area. In case of a robbery or break-in, should the law prevent me from carrying a handgun in my store for self-protection? Does it make sense that our current regulations effectively leave me with the improbable option of carrying a rifle in a business environment?

The prohibition of certain types of firearms, especially handguns, has been justified by concerns over safety and crime. However, statistics show that most gun-related crimes in Canada are committed using illegal firearms rather than those legally owned by responsible gun owners. Tightening regulations on those who abide by the law does not necessarily equate to decreased crime rates, but it does hinder law-abiding citizens from exercising their right to self-defense when needed.

Furthermore, the government's approach has rarely involved dialogue with the affected communities, whether they be sports shooters, businesses, or everyday citizens concerned about self-defense. A more balanced and participatory approach would yield regulations that address both public safety and the rights of individuals.

I'm not asking for all firearms to be allowed unrestricted once again. What I am proposing is the reconsideration of the blanket ban on handguns for responsible citizens. This move could involve stricter vetting processes or enhanced training requirements, rather than a complete prohibition, which seems both excessive and impractical.

Ending the ban on prohibited firearms, specifically handguns, would not only respect the rights of individuals but also potentially increase safety by allowing business owners and citizens the means to protect themselves lawfully. Join me in urging the Canadian government to revisit these laws and develop a plan that balances safety with personal freedoms.
