Any time now, Tim Hortons is expected to launch its famous “Roll Up the Rim to Win” contest, which Canadian coffee enthusiasts love. Unfortunately, the prizes come at a high environmental cost, as thousands of single-use cups end up in oceans, on roadsides, or in landfills.
As mentioned in our previous update, we are challenging Tim Hortons to promote an ecologically-friendly version of the “Roll Up the Rim to Win” contest. We asked you to share your ideas on how the coffee chain can prevent unnecessary waste.
Many great ideas came up, here’s our top four picks:
- Catherine T. of Nelson BC suggests that only people who bring in reusable cups get to play. She also recommends that the contest should be digital instead of being promoted on disposable, single-use cups.
- Glen G. from Windsor suggests Tim Hortons should hand out a loyalty card and scan it to uncover who wins, instead of handing out disposable cups.
- Janet M. from Paradise, Pennsylvania (USA), thought it would be a good idea to use a receipt number instead of a cup and to reward customers with reusable cups with two chances to win!
- Nicole O. from Edmonton suggested the wins could come up directly on screens that display our order(s) - an animation or sound could announce the winner and prize!
We were also thinking between the three of us that an app, connected to a number or a barcode given in the store, could also let people know right away if they won.
If you have more ideas on how Tim Hortons could promote an ecological version of their contest, please keep on sharing them below!
We sent a letter to Restaurant Brand International’s leadership this morning to ask them if they were planning on investing in and using a #BetterCup at their Tim Hortons locations. We hope to hear back from them soon!
Meanwhile, thank you for continuing to share our petition, to encourage Tim Hortons to step up and be environmental leaders.
For our planet,
Mya, Eve and Ben
