When the Mersey Tunnels were first built, the promise was clear: once the tunnels were fully paid for, “the tolls would be abolished” and the crossings would be “free for the people of Merseyside.” That promise has long been forgotten. In fact, the Queensway Tunnel (Birkenhead Tunnel) was fully paid for in 1975—nearly 50 years ago—yet drivers are still paying the tolls today.
The tunnels have long been a revenue stream for the council, but it’s time to put that money to better use. Instead of continuing to charge tolls with no end in sight, let’s use that revenue to support local charities, starting with Zoe’s Place.
Saving Zoe’s Place – A Community Effort
Zoe’s Place provides vital care to children with life-limiting conditions, but they are facing a severe funding crisis. With the extra £2.1 million needed to save Zoe’s Place, we could raise the money in just 9 days from toll revenue alone. After that, the people of Liverpool should decide which charity to support next, turning these tolls into a continuous force for good.
What It Could Do for Merseyside and our people!
The Mersey Tunnels and Runcorn Bridge bring in £90 million annually. Redirecting part of that revenue to support local causes would make a tangible difference in the city region:
• Thousands of families would benefit from vital services funded by this money.
• Local charities like food banks, mental health services, and youth organizations would receive the financial support they desperately need.
• It would boost the local economy, creating a cycle of funding that stays within our community.
