TIME FOR CHANGE - MOVE IT SHOW - Immediate Media Co
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling for urgent reforms to the working conditions, pay structure, and overall professional environment at Move It Dance Convention (Immediate Media Co) As a leading platform in the UK dance industry, Move It has a responsibility to set the standard for fairness, professionalism, and respect for the artists, teachers, and performers who make the event what it is.
The current conditions at Move It fail to meet these basic standards, leaving educators, industry professionals, and students short-changed. We demand immediate changes to ensure that Move It upholds the integrity of the dance industry rather than exploiting those who bring value to this event.
Our Concerns:
1.Unacceptable Pay Structure – Paying teachers an average of 10% of class takings is an insult to the time, expertise, and effort that professionals bring to their sessions. The current system does not reflect the value of educators and must be revised to ensure fair and sustainable pay.
2.No Pay Differentiation for Experience – Whether you are an industry-leading choreographer or a new instructor, Move It offers the same low rate. Experience, reputation, and contribution to the industry must be reflected in fair and tiered pay.
3.Inadequate Class Length & Compensation – Classes run for 45 minutes, which is often too short to deliver real value to students, yet long enough for the poor pay to feel even more insulting. Either class length should be increased, or compensation should be significantly raised.
4. Unprofessional Teaching Environment – Teachers are constantly battling overwhelming noise levels from other workshops, performances, and open spaces. It is impossible to create an effective learning atmosphere under these conditions.
5. Lack of Safeguarding Measures – Move It must implement stricter safeguarding policies to ensure the safety and well-being of children participating in classes and performances. This includes appropriate supervision, enhanced background checks for all staff, clear procedures for reporting concerns, and a secure environment that prioritises the protection of young dancers. Additionally, there must be stricter regulations on age-appropriate class content to prevent young children from being placed in unsuitable sessions, such as heels or commercial-style classes. Furthermore, the provocative nature of performances on the Main Stage must be reviewed to maintain a professional standard that upholds the integrity of the industry while ensuring content remains appropriate for all audiences, including young dancers and their families.
Our Demands:
•Fair Pay Structure – A minimum guaranteed rate for teachers, plus a percentage-based system that fairly reflects industry standards.
•Tiered Pay for Experience – Senior educators and established professionals must be compensated accordingly.
•Improved Teaching Conditions – Control sound levels to allow a functional and respectful learning space.
•Strengthened Safeguarding Policies & vet the nature of Main Stage performances to maintain a professional and industry-respected standard, ensuring content remains appropriate for all participants and audiences.
Move It Show - Immediate Media Co is marketed as a celebration of dance yet its treatment of the professionals who make it possible tells a different story. Without immediate changes, it risks losing the trust and support of the very industry it claims to represent.
We urge Immediate Media Co (move it show) to take action now and work with teachers, choreographers, and performers to create a fair, professional, and respectful working environment. Until then, we will continue to speak out and demand better for our UK Dance industry.
Let’s stand together for a fairer, more professional dance industry.
