Tide of Change : End the Nets

Tide of Change : End the Nets
The issue
I have always loved the ocean. There is something so freeing and peaceful about the ocean, and it is home to thousands of beautiful and innocent animals. Wildlife is still life, and it breaks my heart to know that, each summer, Australia’s coastline becomes a deadly trap for marine wildlife.
Outdated shark nets, meant to "protect" swimmers, are causing more harm than good. Each year, hundreds of innocent marine animals, including endangered turtles, dolphins, rays, and even harmless sharks, fall victim to these lethal nets. These nets were installed with the intention of making the ocean safer for people, yet there is no concrete evidence that they effectively protect swimmers. Instead, they threaten the very ecosystems that sustain the ocean's health.
According to research conducted by marine scientists, non-lethal options such as drone surveillance, eco-friendly barriers, and electronic deterrence have proven to be more effective in ensuring swimmer safety without endangering marine life. By continuing to use these outdated nets, we not only jeopardize marine biodiversity but also ignore advancements in technology that offer better solutions.
We must put a stop to the unnecessary destruction of ocean life. We call on the Australian federal and state governments to immediately remove all lethal shark nets and adopt non-lethal alternatives that will protect both swimmers and marine ecosystems. It's time for Australia to lead by example in marine conservation.
Please sign this petition to demand that the governments of Australia act now to safeguard both human swimmers and the precious wildlife that calls our ocean home. Only collective action will ensure a healthier, more balanced future for our marine environments.
