Trousers For Thornhill

The Issue

Many schools across the UK allow their pupils to make the choice whether their pupils want to wear trousers or skirts to school, yet Thornhill refuses to change with the times and remains stuck in a sexist part of history when girls in schools were restricted only to skirts.

These are the reasons why we believe we deserve the freedom of choice over our uniform:

1. Trousers tend to be cheaper and therefore are a valid option for families or students who may struggle financially.

2. Throughout history trousers have always been worn by women, with the garment even dating as far back to 470 BC.

3. Wearing trousers or skirts should not and does not infringe on our education. It does not affect our performance.

4. It restricts our sense of freedom.

5. Many professional women wear trousers in the workplace, for example, teachers, doctors and nurses.

6. It is just plain sexist. Why should we be made to feel different to men when  women have fought so long for the opposite?

7. By removing the ‘masculine’ connotations surrounding trousers, this will help break down gender stereotypes that the school are enforcing.
