The Issue

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is advertised as a 2SLGBTQ+ inclusive space, yet 2SLGBTQ+ students continue to advocate for a sense of belonging, community connection, and a safe place of gathering. This value of inclusivity is behind times as TRU is the only university in BC without a Pride Centre on campus or within accessible reach.

The campus Pride Club, TRUSU Pride Club, submitted a formal proposal in 2017 expressing the need for 2SLGBTQ+ resources and a Pride Centre on campus. However, our advocacy continues to lengthen, 7 years later, still without a queer-dedicated space. Not only does this issue press true for students, but this stretches to all 2SLGBTQ+ community members in Kamloops because there is a complete absence of safe, queer-specific space. Meanwhile, TRU has the power to change this and create a momentous supportive action for the entirety of our Kamloops, and surrounding area, 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Without a sense of belonging or community connection, isolation and detachment weigh heavily on the mental health of 2SLGBTQ+ people. The results are that 2SLGBTQ+ individuals have to rely on services that are typically not sensitive, do not understand, or discriminate against 2SLGBTQ+ struggles. Additionally, many international students have experienced hate, discrimination, and judgement because of their 2SLGBTQ+ identity and have not been allowed to be themselves before becoming TRU students. Therefore, students are facing numerous barriers, including needing a safe place for expression and exploration.

The TRUSU Pride Club has been hosting a bi-weekly social group, Queer Connections, that has been running since January 2020 on the TRU campus. This is the only consistent outlet for 2SLGBTQ+ students to meet. The number of participants continues to grow as they rely on this group as a safe place to express themselves authentically and genuinely, even if only for a few hours a month. 4 years later, 2SLGBTQ+ students and community members rely on Queer Connections as their source of connection and sense of belonging. All milestones of 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion on campus have been made solely from the efforts of students and volunteers. Despite our commitment, we still face barriers as we have no specific space to gather.

It is time for allyship to reign true in the Kamloops Community as allyship involves action. Having our own designated Pride Centre on campus will give a safe place for 2SLGBTQ+ students to access resources, assistance, and a sense of belonging without fear of judgment, hate, or discrimination. Our 2SLGBTQ+ events could be held at the Pride Centre, meaning there will always be a place to celebrate and have consistent social outlets, such as Queer Connections or other pride events. The Pride Centre would be a welcoming environment where students can find community connection and start their journey of self-discovery for domestic and international students.

We hope you consider the outstanding benefits of having a Pride Centre at TRU and look forward to your support. Thank you for your time.
