Thomas Deangelo Stith #1189522
I am currently incarcerated at Pocahontas State Correctional Center, a State prison located in Virginia. I was given numerous charges by the Commonwealth of Virginia Attorney in the city of Chesapeake in order to secure their convictions, were these charges wholly accurate? Absolutely not!
The sentence I was given was not only unfair, but unjust and downright excessive. I am not a murderer,  nor did I rape anyone, however, I was sentenced to 70 years for low level drug charges. Having already served approximately 8 years, it is time to try to fix this broken system, not only for myself and my family, but for others out there who were given outrageously lengthy sentences.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia in the Tidewater Gardens area, I was raised by my Grandmother from the age of 6 months until the age of 18 years old. In my younger years, I had to battle with the fact that both parents were absent in the home due to drug addiction. The Tidewater Gardens area of Norfolk was and is an area of high-crime and deprivation, where drugs and violence are, regrettably an everyday occurrence among the community.
Just like any other child, I loved playing sports growing up and I played for the Honorable Joe Austin, a very well respected man and mentor to the young children of the community.
My family would describe me as a good man and a great Father of four beautiful children, but a man who was clearly used as a pawn to combat the war on drugs, to make an example out of. This profoundly biased criminal justice system has disproportionately taken my life away from me and my children, yet there are major drug kingpins all over the United States that are only serving sentences ranging from 10 to 25 years and compared to what I was given, these are, on the whole, fairly light for their crimes.
This is completely erroneous and your help is truly needed. Thank you so much for reading and I am desperately seeking assistance from you wonderful people.
Please sign this petition in hopes that the Governor of Virginia will address how the mandatory minimum sentencing laws disproportionately affect people of color for non violent offenses in the state of Virginia.
