Dear Supporter
We are making waves ! 14650 + of us are at last getting our concerns across .
The BSACI latest response, released yesterday afternoon , is very disappointing . It fails to address any of our major concerns which I have gathered from our campaigns feedback . Here are the four most important issues .
Firstly the report fails to address the unpredictability of Anaphylaxis . No two reactions are the same . Many people report years of mild reactions not requiring any epi pen to full blown anaphylaxis requiring two pens and further hospital treatment , the BSACI as I read it say that they will risk assess the individual at the time of prescribing the pens to see if they need more than one. Flawed .
This leads onto the second point not addressed . Should that person who has had mild reactions all their life and carry one pen find themselves in a major anaphylactic reaction then they would of course administer their first and only pen and dial 999. This in many regularly reported cases has led to lengthy waits of up to 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive . Last year I pushed the allergy charities go get a response on wether 999 calls are being triaged . This indeed turns out to be the case as confirmed in writing by Dame Sally Davies . A 999 Anaphylaxis emergency call will NOT guarantee a urgent response . Unless the patient is unconscious or suffering chest pain. The Anaphylaxis Campaign even updated their advice on emergency responses after the investigations were complete . The BSACI have not once addressed response times in their press releases.
Thirdly many of us who do recieve our prescriptions then regularly get given pens with issues around shelf life . In the last 4 years ours alone have gone from 16 months , to 10 and even 9 . If they want to save money which is clearly a major reason then they should be resolving these supply issues and issuing Emerade pens with a 30 month shelf life.
Finally it has been noted they are changing tact slightly . Talking of the increasing numbers of patients not carrying their pen. Whilst I support any campaign that improves people's response to this issue it is not relevant to this petition I started or the #carrytwo campaign . If young people are not carrying pens it's a failure by their parents and allergy specialists it should NOT detract from our position, over 14,000 of us plus many many more clearly do carry more than one pen which is why we are fighting to keep our 2,3,4 +pens .
I have posted a link that should show you yesterday's response . You will note it adds that if we have concerns we should speak to our allergy services provider , that alone is questionable as many report no specialist visits appointments and no follow ups , just repeat prescriptions from doctors . Many doctors , including my own that are no doubt thrilled by these cost cutting recommendations .
So finally please do support #carrytwo campaign on Twitter, we have been getting media attention and are in talks with a number of journalists . There is a Facebook page ' hashtag carry two ' you can also join .
Thanks again for backing this petition and please, please keep sharing and promoting and sharing experiences to whom ever in authority that will listen.
Together we can do this !
