RSPO statement on the killing of an orangutan in Kapuas, Central Kalimantan Feb. 16th, 2017. We are saddened and shocked by the recent news regarding the killing of an orangutan specimen in Kapuas, Central Kalimantan. The news alleged that the killing took place in PT Susantri Permai, a subsidiary of an RSPO Member company, Genting Plantation Berhad. The killing or harming of endangered species is against the Indonesian Law. It is also unacceptable and against both the RSPO Code of Conduct and RSPO Principles and Criteria, to which RSPO Members are required to abide. The RSPO is taking these allegations extremely seriously, our RSPO Indonesia representative Office has already proceeded contacting the company following the initial news on this case, which will be brought up to the RSPO Complaints Panel for consideration. The company has so far informed us that they have immediately proceeded filing a police report on the case. We understand that, as of now, the local police has captured 10 people allegedly involved in the slaughtering of the orangutan. A meeting has been arranged for the 27 February between Genting plantation representatives, Wakil Komisi IV DPR/Vice Chairman Commission IV House of Representative and RSPO Indonesia, represented by Impact team and Technical adviser for RSPO Darmawan Liswanto, to discuss the outcomes of the preliminary findings and to confirm the exact location of the incident and any involvement of members of the company staff in the killing. We are constantly in contact with our local stakeholders’ network on this case, and we will issue a follow-up statement in due course with any updates. Best Regards, RSPO Indonesia - Jakarta
