This Is Our Theatre - A Community-Led Future for Chelsea Theatre

The Issue

Chelsea Theatre sits in the heart of the World’s End Estate — one of London’s most culturally rich and historically overlooked communities. Built to serve the residents of this estate, the theatre was meant to be a creative home for all — especially Global Majority communities.

But today, too many of us feel unwelcome. Ignored. Excluded.

The people who built the creative life of this area — residents, artists, youth leaders, elders, community workers — have been pushed to the margins. Instead of being a beacon for inclusion and social cohesion, the theatre has become a space of silence, defensiveness, and detachment.

We say: no more.

This petition is a call for transformation — not preservation. We don’t just want access to the building. We want transparency, accountability, and justice. We want a Chelsea Theatre that reflects the people who live, work, create, and care in this borough.

🎯 We demand a Chelsea Theatre that is:

🧭 Transparent & Accountable

* Public disclosure of funding sources, budgets, board decisions, and use of donations.

* A full, honest response to allegations of misappropriation of funds and money laundering.

* An end to fear-based messaging like “Help Save Chelsea Theatre” unless it comes with clarity and accountability.

✊🏾 Justice for All

We demand justice and reparations for:

* Residents, creatives, grassroots organisations, and past and present staff who have faced:

  * Racial discrimination

  * Cultural erasure

  * Unfair or hostile treatment

  * Tokenism and gatekeeping

* Partners like Intermission Youth Theatre, whose contributions have been erased and disrespected.

Chelsea Theatre must stop silencing truth and instead lead with restorative justice. That means:

🔄 Terms of Restorative Justice

1. Public acknowledgment of harm — including formal apologies for exclusion and discrimination.

2. Community listening forums where people affected can speak freely and be heard.

3. Independent review of past complaints — with transparent findings.

4. Commitments to non-repetition — through anti-racism training, inclusive hiring, and leadership reform.

5. Reparative action — such as programming for and by those impacted, support for excluded artists, and space for healing.

6. Ongoing accountability mechanisms — including a community-led ethics or equity council.

This isn’t about blame — it’s about honesty, healing, and doing right by the community.

🏠 A Safe & Inclusive Community Space

Chelsea Theatre must be a place where all are:

* Welcomed regardless of race, gender, age, ability, class or background

* Safe to gather, speak, create and lead

* Represented at every level — on stage, behind the scenes, and in leadership

The theatre must champion social cohesion, not just in its programming, but in how it treats people. This space was built with the World’s End Estate in mind. That purpose must be honoured.

👥 Community-Led

* Leadership that reflects us — especially Black and Global Majority communities

* A theatre that is run with us, by us, and for us

* A Community Advisory Board with real decision-making power

🎭 Culturally Grounded & Inclusive

* Programmes for all ages, genders, and cultural communities

* Artistic excellence that uplifts underrepresented voices

* Space for new talent, youth, elders, and community storytelling

💼 Warm, Trained & Professional Staff

* All staff trained in:

  * Cultural understanding

  * Unconscious bias

  * Customer care

* A culture of respect, kindness and professional accountability

💥 The Bottom Line

Chelsea Theatre must stop alienating the very people it exists to serve.

We know what’s possible — because we are the residents, artists, producers, audiences, educators and culture makers. We’ve built brilliance with scraps, brought joy in hard times, and kept the community alive even when institutions turned their backs.

We don’t want access.

We want equity.

We don’t want to be included.

We want to lead.

It’s time to stop gatekeeping and start listening.

It’s time to stop hiding and start healing.

It’s time to return Chelsea Theatre to its people — not as a favour, but as a right.
