First, a medical update. In the last 100 days my 77 year old dad (Grandpa) Kamal was taken from Evin prison to hospital five times for many medical tests, most recently on Tuesday 7 March for more eye tests. Much better than the first four and a half years of detention where Dad received no hospital treatment!
However, what’s strange and leaves us very worried is neither Dad nor we are being told anything about what tests are being done or the outcome of the tests. It’s not clear to us how bad his health is and whether he is getting the treatment he needs – for example why hasn’t he been given eye cataracts operations? At his age health can rapidly deteriorate.
This Monday 20 March is Norooz, the New Year under an ancient Persian calendar, typically a time for families to gather and hope for a better world. Unfortunately, Monday will mark the 6 year anniversary since Dad saw his children (my sister and me) or his grandchildren (my two daughters). It feels like a lifetime.
Dad has been eligible for release from prison each day of the last 1,160 days, but he’s still there. Why?
To mark this sad anniversary, my Member of Parliament Oliver Dowden and I will be delivering a letter to the Foreign Office with co-signatures from around 220 MPs from all parties asking the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to do everything he can to secure the release of Dad and two other UK citizens held in Evin prison, Nazanin and Roya, before it is too late. Many other MPs have written privately.
It’s extremely unusual in the UK parliamentary system for so many MPs to put their name to the same request of government. Thank you so much for your efforts contacting your MPs asking them to help. (And your European Parliament representatives – remember last October 456 MEPs asked Iran to free Dad!)
We cling to fond memories of Dad’s presence, particularly the laughs he used to have with my daughters. Your kind thoughts, prayers and messages are much appreciated.
Happy Norooz New Year,
Kamran and family
