Unfortunately my 77 year old dad (Grandpa) Kamal is still in Evin prison. Just like last year, we had been told that Dad would be released this Norooz New Year, but no such luck. On 16 April 2016 (1 year ago today) the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Lead Federica Mogherini visited Tehran with 7 EU Commissioners, in a visit that generated much fanfare. Unfortunately, Mogherini has failed to secure the release of Dad, her fellow European citizen. A number of you have contacted us recently to ask if there is anything you can do to help. If you are happy to, please write to the Members of European Parliament (MEPs) who serve you, even if you have written before, asking them to raise Dad’s predicament with Mogherini directly. I am your constituent and would like your help to try to secure the release of fellow European citizen Grandpa Kamal Foroughi, held in Evin prison Iran since May 2011 with no reason ever provided. The grounds for his release are overwhelming: • Compassion: Grandpa Kamal has not seen his daughter, son or two granddaughters in UK for over 6 years, missing half his grandchildren’s lives. He has had no visitors in over 2,000 days. • Medical: Grandpa Kamal is 77 years old and was deprived of a medical for 4.5 years. In recent months, he was taken to hospital 5 times for tests, but he and his family have received no test results or information about what tests were done and why. His family is very worried he will die in prison. • Legal: Grandpa Kamal has been eligible for release each day since January 2014. His lawyer has made over 50 applications for his release, without reply.
