Today is day 2,100 of my 77 year old dad (Grandpa) Kamal’s detention in Evin prison. 5 years 9 months. Last week, we met with Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood, who tried to reassure us about how hard the Foreign Office is working to try to secure Dad’s release. We are very grateful for everyone’s efforts. The problem is of course, Dad’s still in prison. One year ago Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited London. He was a guest of the UK parliament and met with many UK political leaders including the then UK Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. At that time we were hopeful that Iran would release Dad very soon, recognising the very strong humanitarian, medical and legal grounds for release. Our optimism was shared by Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, who in an interview with Kay Burley of Sky News said he was “very optimistic we will get progress on this case” (i.e. Dad’s release). Watching the end of the interview 1 year later, we wonder: Is the British Government treating Dad’s detention as top priority in its dealings with Iran? Kamran and family
