Dear Supporters, A week ago, the UK Foreign Office revealed that France, Germany and Italy have all asked Iran to free Grandpa Kamal. I am so grateful to our European partners for their solidarity. This Monday to Wednesday, I was in Brussels with fellow campaigner Richard Ratcliffe whose 37 year old charity worker wife Nazanin is being held in detention in Iran. We had a busy few days, including many meetings with MEPs and European Parliament President Schulz’s and European Council President Tusk’s teams. There were two main events: 1. On Tuesday Richard and I spoke at an MEP event about our loved ones Nazanin’s and Grandpa Kamal’s ordeals in Iranian prisons. We were lucky to be joined by 81 year old Roger Cooper who was in Evin Prison from December 1985 to April 1991, an unwanted world record for a European citizen in an Iranian jail. Roger Cooper spoke eloquently about life inside Evin Prison and how unjust the detention and trial process was – amazing how history repeats itself. This meeting helped get MEPs to take notice of our loved ones – hopefully it will energise them to do much more going forwards. The MEPs said how many of you had written to them asking them to get involved – thank you so much. 2. On Wednesday I delivered this Change petition with 134,000 signatures to the team of Federica Mogherini, the European Union Foreign Affairs Lead. Thank you so much for signing. We had a good meeting with Mogherini’s Iran Taskforce and discussed what steps the EU can take in future to help free Grandpa Kamal. Of course Iran could end our nightmare any day but if not the EU will do more. Spending time with children this week reminded me why our campaign is so important. Old friends who my wife Gillian and I had not seen for many years invited me to stay with them in Brussels Monday and Tuesday night. I really enjoyed meeting their wonderful children and we had great chats in the evenings. Then when I got home Wednesday evening, I was so happy to see my daughters again after three days away. We laughed and played and went for a short bike ride. It is so painful for Grandpa Kamal to have missed my two daughters growing up for the last 5+ years, and Nazanin Ratcliffe to be apart from her 23 month old daughter Gabriella for the last 50+ days. The campaign goes on. Please keep Sharing, Kamran and family PS we still think Grandpa Kamal is about to be taken to hospital for medical checks, which would be great, but it hasn't happened yet.
