Dear Supporters, It has been a busy week, accompanying Richard Ratcliffe (Nazanin’s husband) to Number 10 Downing Street (UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s residence) to deliver her petition, and attending Grandpa Kamal’s debate in the House of Commons (UK parliament) Thursday evening, where Nazanin’s detention was also discussed. The debate was led by my MP Oliver Dowden and was very helpful, with contributions from the Foreign Office Minister Tobias Ellwood and all major parties in the UK except one. (The SNP could not make the debate but one of their MPs Deirdre Brock submitted a written question the day before about Grandpa Kamal’s lack of medical care.) All contributors called on Iran to release Grandpa Kamal after 5 long years in Evin Prison. Please click the following link to read the transcript: https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2016-05-19/debates/16051960000004/DetentionOfKamalForoughiInIran One major point made by Minister Ellwood is that France, Germany and Italy have all asked Iran to free Grandpa Kamal. This is something I first asked the Foreign Office to ask them to do back in June 2015 (a long time ago now!), and it is an encouraging sign that our European Union partners have joined the UK in lobbying for Grandpa Kamal’s freedom. Tomorrow I depart for Brussels where I will be joined by Richard Ratcliffe and Roger Cooper, who was in Evin Prison from December 1985 to April 1991. Tuesday morning we plead for MEPs’ help at the European Parliament, and Wednesday morning I present this petition to the team of European Foreign Affairs lead Federica Mogherini. Please keep sharing this petition! Enough about the politics - what about Grandpa Kamal? I spoke to him this morning, and he sounded positive. He thinks he will be taken back to a hospital outside Evin Prison for further medical tests very soon – this would be a welcome development. (Remember this has only happened once before in 5 years, on Tuesday 17 November 2015.) Fingers crossed! Your thoughts and prayers are most welcome, Kamran and family PS please find below links to postings on social media. If you’re on social media, please can you help spread the news?
