Back in July, it all seemed so unlikely. At The Independent, we had become convinced that a referendum was the right way out of the Brexit mess, but it didn’t look like we could, realistically, win this campaign. Against the slogans of the hard Brexiteers, with their shouts of “saboteurs” and the “will of the people”, speaking up for the British people to have a Final Say on EU withdrawal seemed just too dangerous to most.
But in the six months that have followed, 1.1 million of you have changed all that. Together we have shown that the people can still have power, and that if we work together we have real leverage in Westminster.
Now the fight for the British people to take back control (excuse the phrase) of the Brexit process is absolutely at the centre of this debate in Westminster, and the hot subject of political discussion across the country.
We cannot let this opportunity pass us by now.
Even if you have signed our petition, we can still do more to tell Westminster what the people want and make sure they act in the interests of democracy.
Many of you have asked how you can make a difference – so here are the answers:
1) Share the petition
We have received an unprecedented amount of support so far but as the deadlock in Westminster continues, the more signatures we obtain the more influence our campaign will have – so share it far and wide and ask your friends and family to sign it and do the same.
2) Use your social media accounts
Take a picture of yourself holding a sign that says “I want a Final Say!” (I did!) and then post it on social media with the hashtag #FinalSay. Every single post helps to keep the momentum going.
3) Download the poster
Download our Final Say poster by clicking here, which you can print out or share on social media.
4) Email your MP and voice your opinion
Now that Theresa May’s deal has been rejected, MPs have increased influence over the Brexit process, so if you want a Final Say referendum you should contact your MP and tell them exactly that.
You can find your MP’s contact details on the parliament website – send them an email about how you feel, what you think is the best course of action and what issues matter to you. Download our suggested email template by clicking here, but of course add your own adaptations.
5) Labour party members
This one is for those of you who are members of the Labour party.
The party’s current official policy is to push for a general election but after the motion of no confidence was rejected by the Commons yesterday, Jeremy Corbyn says he will “keep all options on the table,” including a Final Say referendum.
If you’re a Labour party member, get in touch with your constituency Labour party and speak directly to your local councillors and MPs/parliamentary candidates.
There could soon be a shift in Labour party policy and members voicing their opinions is likely to have a major impact.
6) Any other ideas?
Send them to finalsay@independent.co.uk. This is your campaign too!
Thanks for reading. Whichever side of the debate you’re on, let’s win a Final Say and give our democracy back to the people. We should decide. We just can’t rely on a deadlocked, divided House of Commons to make the best call for all our futures.
