Lipoedema is an incurable disorder where there is enlargement of both legs due to deposits of fat under the skin. Typically it gets worse over time, pain is present, and sufferers bruise very easily. In severe cases the trunk and upper body may be involved. Lipedema is commonly misdiagnosed as many women experiences just being told they are fat and need to diet. When in fact this will not help reduce the Edema that’s present. The cause is unknown but is believed to involve genetics and hormonal factors, including Trauma. It often runs in families. But many women go undiagnosed due to the lack of knowledge in Gp’s and Doctors. Risk factors include being overweight or obese. Other conditions that may present similarly include obesity, lipohypertrophy, chronic venous insufficiency, and lymphedema. Even though this is a chronic and painful condition there is currently no treatment available on the NHS as it’s seen as cosmetic. There are treatments available that could greatly reduce the swelling and pain but as of yet they are only available through the private sector and they cost thousands. One of the main reasons I am partitioning is I am one of the many many people diagnosed with this condition I’m 46 years old and it effects my confidence as a woman every day. There are so many women like me who are desperate to lead a normal quality of life and it feels incredibly unfair that the treatment that could greatly help us is still not available. So I’m asking for everyone’s support to raise awareness and take this partition to the goverment to get this chsnged.
