Imagineering: Revamp the Imagination Pavilion at EPCOT

Imagineering: Revamp the Imagination Pavilion at EPCOT
The Issue
"Journey Into Imagination" at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center near Orlando, Florida, when first opened in 1983 has been a beloved attraction by many Disney fans. For the ride's interesting premise with the character Dreamfinder and his Figment, guests/tourists explore the theme of how imagination and creativity sparks through the arts, literature, and science. The ride's concept was conceived by former Imagineer Tony Baxter. Out of all of EPCOT Center's original attractions focusing on progress, communication, agriculture, oceanography, energy, transportation and life/health, the pavilion talks about how "sparks" can create ideas.
The Imagination pavilion also included a second floor play area called ImageWorks, home to numerous hands-on interactive areas, and the iconic Rainbow Corridor tunnel. Also in the pavilion, the Magic Eye Theatre, a 3D/4D theatre originally showing Magic Journeys, Captain E.O., and Honey I Shrunk the Audience, the catalyst changing the unfortunate future of the pavilion.
The original version lasted for 15 years until 1998. To tie in with the Imagination Institute theme from the Honey I Shrunk the Audience show, Disney and Imagineering reimagined the pavilion as "Journey Into YOUR Imagination" opening in October 1999 featuring Eric Idle of Monty Python fame as Dr. Nigel Channing. Along with the absence of Figment minus some cameos, the new iteration received negative feedback. And noticeably, ImageWorks was moved downstairs, and the ride's track length is shortened from 14 minutes to 5 minutes. The upstairs have been abandoned until it was turned to a Disney Vacation Club lounge years later. The ride being revamped on the cheap was also the result of Kodak, the pavilion's sponsor, and their financial issues due to the rising increase in digital cameras.
The ride was closed in 2001 after a short run. With Kodak's financial difficulties and the 9/11 attacks resulting in budget cuts, the pavilion was reimagined on the cheap into the current Journey Into Imagination with Figment. Reactions were mixed, but still better than the 1999 version. To this day, this iteration is still standing and outliving the original version of the ride. And with Honey I Shrunk the Audience no longer playing, the pavilion's connection is lost.
Then, Disney lost Kodak as their longtime sponsor also meaning the pavilion lost its sponsor after 27 years. The pavilion has been limping for years without an update.
Now, Disney currently has plans to overhaul and transform EPCOT. Many were disappointed at the recent D23 Expo that the Imagination pavilion getting a revamp was not mentioned or brought in the plans. And then the COVID shutdown results in delays and plans altered. Disney to this day has not brought up a word when they are fixing the outdated Imagination pavilion with a mostly inactive second floor, an outdated ride still running since 2002, and the Magic Eye Theatre only playing Disney/Pixar shorts, which is honestly out of place for EPCOT.
Figment is considered to be a profitable character in terms of merchandise and presence at EPCOT's festivals.
The park's overhaul is a ongoing multi-year transformation, but if Disney is refusing, or never bothering to update Figment as part of their plans, the pavilion would limp on for many years as the park is prioritizing on other transformations and other projects based on current-popular IPs Disney is highlighting on.
That is why we are turning to you. We want to ask and point out to Walt Disney Imagineering, Zach Riddley, Josh D'Amaro, and many of Disney Parks executives and talent to take attention at the limping Imagination pavilion. We would like to see a new version of Journey Into Imagination with the Dreamfinder and Figment characters together again, a new ImageWorks all on the pavilion's second floor, and a new 4D show for the Magic Eye Theatre to give the pavilion life again.
At this time, Disney is currently prioritizing on the Epcot entrance, the central spine of the park, Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, Space 220, and the Play Pavilion. Once that is done, Disney could revamp the Gran Fiesta Tour to a Coco themed ride, and also revamp the Finding Nemo ride in The Seas pavilion to a new version based on the Marine Life Institute from Finding Dory.
--------
Seeing the recent technological achievements Imagineering has done on attractions like "Mystic Manor" and "Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway" utilizing trackless ride vehicles, we would like to see something like that for the Figment ride revamp.
Overall, we want to ask Disney and Imagineering to take a look at the Imagination pavilion and refurbish, revamp, and reimagine the pavilion with a new Figment attraction with a new story themed to creativity and imagination, along with a better than ever ImageWorks, and a new 4D film based on a Disney IP like Inside Out.
The EPCOT Experience in the Odyssey pavilion will later announce more changes coming to EPCOT, so we hope the Imagination pavilion will receive presence and notice.
We hope the Imagination pavilion could be revamped to make the EPCOT overhaul complete and hoping park guests can come back for something new.
---------
With the current layoffs taking place and budget cuts taking place due to the recent COVID shutdown of EPCOT, the long awaited Figment revamp may take a while. Once the economy is stable again, we hope Disney has plans to revamp the pavilion. It would be disappointed to see all of EPCOT updated while the Imagination Pavilion is still outdated by today's Disney standards.
Let's make the Imagination pavilion timeless once again.
