SCROLL for UPCOMING CORONERS COURT LISTINGS

The Virtual INQUEST  calls for Open Justice Standards and a National Coroners Court Listing Dashboard to ensure timely, consistent and transparent public AVL access to coronial proceedings across Australia. The ANZLEAC4PRD citizen research project complements and naturally extends the principles of AustLII Australian Coronial Law Library, established in 2023 to foster a safer, more just Australia

Modern open justice demands that families and the public can seamlessly see, hear, and understand how deaths are investigated. Because coronial proceedings serve the public interest, they must remain open unless a Coroner lawfully orders otherwise. 

To help achieve this goal, The Virtual INQUEST invites members of the public to join the optional  SELF REPORTING Citizen Researcher Project.

Citizen Researchers voluntarily request access to coronial hearings, record their experiences, and contribute de-identified data that helps identify barriers, inconsistencies and examples of best practice across jurisdictions. This evidence will support the development of a National Coroners Court Listings Dashboard and strengthen the case for nationally consistent access standards.

Whether you attend one hearing or many, your participation can help build the first evidence base on public AVL access to coronial proceedings in Australia. Participation is entirely voluntary, and Citizen Researchers may choose which hearings they apply to attend and how often they participate.

Integrating online access links into all public court listings, supported by evidence gathered through citizen research, will strengthen accountability, increase public confidence, and enhance the systemic learning necessary to prevent future deaths.

About Us
Australia New Zealand Lived Experience Advisory Council for Police Related Deaths (ANZLEAC4PRD) is an independent, peer led advisory body comprised of families and individuals directly affected by deaths following police contact across Australia and New Zealand.

Drawing on lived experience, research and practical reform advocacy, the Council works to identify and address systemic failures at the intersection of policing, mental health, human rights and public safety. Its work focuses not only on accountability after death, but on the prevention of harm before it occurs.

Through policy development, open source research, data analysis, public advocacy and engagement with government, oversight bodies and researchers, ANZLEAC4PRD seeks to strengthen transparency, improve operational practices and promote evidence based reforms within policing and custodial systems.

The Council is particularly focused on police led mental health emergencies, deaths in custody, police shootings and the broader workplace and institutional factors that contribute to high risk outcomes. Central to its work is the principle that the protection of life must remain a primary operational duty of the state, not merely a matter examined after tragedy.
