This very special SSSI "type site" means Faringdon has given its name to unique aspects of its geology: Faringdon fossils, Faringdon Greensands, and the Faringdon Sponge Gravels. We live on the edge of an ancient coral reef- the Corallian Ridge- which underwent a gradual transition to shoreline, and then to land. A "very rich and unusual" assemblage of fossils formed in the sands and waters washing up against the reef over hundreds of thousands of years, and eventually large numbers of terrestrial fossils, including crocodiles and giant plesiosaurs.
At Wicklesham Quarry we have "over 150" species of fossils - "many of which are known to occur only at Faringdon"!
Geologists from all over the world come to see Wicklesham Quarry, one of the oldest known sites for palaeontology. How amazing is that??!!
Do we want to see concrete and warehouses covering this nationally designated site?? NO! NO! NO!
Your donations have pledged £7,860! Please dig deep if you're still thinking about it, or have a few extra quid to spare, and let colleagues, friends, family and EVERYONE know that Wicklesham CrowdJustice Appeal is working to save "one of Britain's richest palaeontological sites"! Please post my updates to your Facebook page.
Thank you again for your support! With your help we can save this wonderful site of geo and biodiversity.
