Stop child labor in Sierra Leone

The Issue

Sierra Leone diamonds are unique and seen as beautiful, but they are gotten in ways that are not beautiful. They are known as blood diamonds not in a good way though. Children are being worked almost to death. Let me give you some statistics, 46 % of miners are of the ages of 5-16 (according to a survey of diamond miners in the Lunda Norte province of Angola) They work 6-7 days a week, they are more likely to get injured in mining accidents. These are children our age and younger, and they do hard labor more than we do school work. Since they are small they are sent into smaller dangerous places to get diamonds but this is where some of these people meet their death. Imagine your sons or daughters dying trying to make less than a dollar, it’s not worth it but there isn’t another choice for these people.

We need to ban the import of Sierra Leone diamonds. These innocent people shouldn’t suffer for our material gain. By banning this import other countries may follow suit and save these workers. We understand by banning the import their wages may go down, but if other areas also ban this import the company will be forced to go bankrupt. We could also make a deal with H.M. Diamonds to take these people out of poverty, and give them more humane working conditions, then the ban can be lifted, and they can continue to distribute diamonds. If we don’t act fast more innocent people will die, and the cycle of child labor will continue.

If this unfairness keeps happening in the future there will be many disadvantages for people working in the mines. Both children and adults working there would be in extreme poverty since they only earn less than a dollar a day. More and more children would be in danger of going into small spaces where they could be killed. These people can become blind after working in the dark for several hours, they could get injuries, people could get stuck, etc. With all this being said it is very clear that working in the mines is very dangerous for both children and adults.

These are the demands that we have to stop this company,

Have the Goverment take a stand against child labor and have the president and all high ranking officials condemn it.
Stop allowing blood diamonds on US soil.
Have public education educate more young people about child labor happening in Sierra Leone.
And to Punish H. M diamonds and other companies for their lack of consideration for humanity in their unfair working practices.
