Make Roar Safe Again

Make Roar Safe Again

The Issue

Over the past couple of weeks there has been a dramatic increase in the number of spiking's and sexual assaults happening in Sheffield SU club nights, especially roar. In the last two weeks, there has been a suspected five spiking's happening to cheerleaders alone, and a further five to freshers at roar. There will also be many more we are not aware of, or have not been reported. Along with this, sexual assault (groping's) within the SU has risen, with many females being inappropriately touched on the club floor. We are demanding change through the increase of security measures, including but not limited to:

  1. Bag checks before entering the SU to ensure no spiking substances are being brought into the club.
  2. Security guard retraining on what to do in the event of a suspected spiking or sexual assault case.
  3. Bouncers being trained to stop someone leaving roar with a visibly too drunk person in order to question their relation to said person. Should a relation not be established by the drunk person, then bouncers should be responsible for ensuring that person is taken home safely. (to happen by the latest of the 7th of November)
  4. Drink covers to be mandatory on all drinks provided by the bar.
  5. Those found guilty of spiking or sexually assaulting someone to be given a life time ban of attending SU club nights, instead of the short ban in place now.
  6. Extra CCTV in place around the club floor to catch spiking/sexual assault offenders. (to happen by the latest of the 7th of November)
  7. Bouncers to allow more flexibility around exiting roar, allowing people into roar (accompanied) to collect drunk housemates or friends.
  8. Extra bouncers in place around roar/SU night outs to keep an eye out for spiking's/sexual assaults (at least until reports of these decrease). (to happen by the latest of the 7th of November)
  9. The re-installation of water provision and food in the quiet room for those who need to sober up before leaving the venue.
  10. The re-opening of the quiet room for all SU nights, we have had reports of this room being closed, despite the fact this measure is essential for those feeling anxious who do not want to enter the smoking area.

Whilst we are aware that the SU is trying to remedy the issue of spiking's/sexual assaults, and applaud/thank them for their efforts, we feel that they are potentially by-passing these easily installed safety measures. The majority of these measures can be installed within days, with bouncers retraining and hiring potentially taking a couple of weeks. Therefore, these measures are obtainable in a quick and easy fashion. It is time to reclaim our roar night outs and make it safe for everyone to enjoy!
