The United States should establish a law implementing a no nuclear first strike policy

The Issue

Nuclear weapons are the most dangerous weapons mankind has ever created and a war utilizing nuclear weapons would end life on this world as we know it. For this reason it is important that the states with nuclear weapons have responsible policies regarding their nuclear arsenals. A no nuclear first strike policy is a way in which states can both lessen the chance of nuclear war and take responsibility

Currently the President of the United States has the sole unchecked power to launch a nuclear weapon under any circumstance. This is a dangerous power that must have a limit. A limit can be found with the passing of a no first strike policy, ensuring that the President and the United States cannot be the first to launch a nuclear strike. As a leading power in the world, it is likely other nuclear states will follow the United States’ lead, thus reducing the risk of a nuclear war.
