Rising Up For Reparations

Rising Up For Reparations
The Issue
The United states has a legal and moral obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United States.
Our ancestors were torn away from their homes and families, enslaved, and forced to fuel this country's economy since the day it was founded. And then they were left landless, impoverished, and disenfranchised.
"Our federal government has never saw it fit on its own to rectify the immeasurable, cataclysmic harms of slavery," nor the need to make amends for the harm it has caused, due to its wrong doing, nor has it acknowledged or repaired the causes and consequences of human rights violations and inequality.
The code of equity, by which we live, demands for every wrong a remedy, but for the wrongs that have been inflicted on the negro citizens by this country, until now there has been no remedies.
We hold the United States to its moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United states. If you look at African Americans today, the disparities that entrenched in slavery still exist.
Let us acknowledge this truth, uncomfortable as it may be: our country was not founded on the principle that all people are created equal, It was founded at the expense of the lives, freedom and well being of Black people whose enslavement, exploitation and dehumanization were written into the constitution.
We are no longer content with the counsel of patience and delay, one hundred and sixty years of delay have passed since President Lincoln freed the slaves and yet, as their heirs, great- grandchildren, grandchildren and children, we are still not fully free, not free from the bonds of injustice, or social and economic oppression.
Black people in our country cannot wait for our government to begin addressing the harm it has caused since this nations founding and that it continues to perpetuate to this day. The purpose of this petition is to bring to our governments attention the seriousness of the harm it has caused, and the fact that we have been severely ruptured and it is now time for repair.
Whereas reparations are defined as victim centered process by which survivors of atrocities and serious human rights violations, and their descendants, have a right to seek restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction, and guarantees of non-repetition for past and on-going harms.
The Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, is an Act of Congress in the United States introduced in 1989 by Rep. John Conyers. The act aims to create a commission to examine the merits of introducing reparations to African-Americans for slavery. The current iteration of the act is sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
135 House of Representatives members have signed on to HR 40, a bill introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18) to examine slavery and discrimination from 1619 to the present and to study and develop reparations proposals for African Americans.
A companion bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), but just 19 of the 47 Democrats and Independents in the Senate have signed on as co-sponsors. This legislation has been introduced into Congress every year since 1979, but it has never been moved to a vote. Now is the time for action.
H. RES. 414
Washington D.C. (May 18, 2023) — Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) introduced a resolution that forcefully argues why the federal government must provide reparations to descendants of enslaved Black people and people of African descent. The resolution outlines the various forms those reparations should take.
With this petition we seek to advance and support existing federal reparation and reparatory justice efforts such as H.R.40, H.Con.40, H. RES. 414 and provide further momentum to reparation efforts state and local levels.
I urge Congress to pass HR 40 which would formally begin the process of studying and developing reparations proposals for Black Americans!
The feeling of the nation must be quickened ; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.
We rise up today in hope of "The Dream," that this nation will sit down at the table of brotherhood in unity, and live out the true meaning of its creed, that all men were created equal, with the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To be free and independent
The time has come for this nation to fulfill its promise of democracy. Now is the time! Counting up the cost. There is an estimated 46 million African Americans in the United States, not all are entitled to receiving reparations unless their ancestors were enslaved in America, but those who are entitled, should recognize the worth and value of the contribution made by their ancestors. Black labor has been foundational to the growth of America and our economy. Enslaved people built the country's early infrastructure and produced lucrative commodities such as cotton and tobacco. After emancipation, African American labor was crucial in industry, agriculture, and service. Again I reiterate that there are 46 million African Americans in the United States. If each were give $ 2 million dollars a piece for reparations it would cost America 92 million dollars. does that sound like a lot and is that a fair price? well the answers are. No it's not a lot. And no its not a fair price! In 1999, the US government signed a Memorandum of Understanding through which it committed to providing Israel with at least US$2.67 billion in military aid annually, for the following ten years; in 2009, the annual amount was raised to US$3 billion; and in 2019, the amount was raised again, now standing at a minimum of US$3.8 billion The United States House of Representatives has passed a Republican plan providing $14.5bn in military aid for Israel for the War on Gaza. Biden has asked Congress to pass a $106bn emergency spending package that includes funding for Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine. Back to the $92 million in reparations for African Americans. Do you know how many times $1 million dollars go into a billion dollars? Nine Hundred Ninety-Nine Million ($ 999,000,000) times. So their you have comparison.
Therefore I ask for your support, so that we may be provided with the the kind of equality of treatment which every American deserves.
Thank you.
