The town of Arnprior needs a climate action plan

The town of Arnprior needs a climate action plan

The Issue

Climate change is a global concern. As a nation, and a global community, we are not on track to keep the rise in global temperatures to the acceptable 1.5 degrees above pre industrial levels. The most recent Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) report shows we reached one degree of warming in 2017. Climate change is a monolith of a problem whose enormity can overwhelm anyone, add to decision fatigue, and create a sort of emotional paralysis. But right now it is important that we continue to take action to address climate change.

But what can one person do about this monolith of a problem? There is power in coming together as a community and thinking about a global problem at the local level. That's why I will be appearing as a delegate to the Arnprior town council January 24th 2022 to ask the town to create a climate action plan as well as establish a committee for climate change considerations.

This far into the crisis, it is irresponsible for any municipality to not have a climate action plan. Lanark County and more than 400 municipalities across the Country are developing a climate action plan. Half of local greenhouse gas emissions are managed or influenced by local governments. That means Arnprior can affect real change. This isn't a national or global problem, it starts with us.

By signing this petition you are showing your town it is imperative to address climate change. By signing this petition you are taking action to address climate change. By signing this petition you are coming together as a community to demonstrate that we take climate change seriously.

What is a climate action plan?
A climate action plan is a detailed and strategic framework for measuring, planning, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and related climatic impacts. Climate action plans, at a minimum, include an inventory of existing emissions, reduction goals or targets, and analyzed and prioritized reduction actions.

Why is it important the town of Arnprior have a climate action plan?
By creating a climate action plan, the town of Arnprior;

- Situates itself within the global community,
- Gives language to the urgency of the climate crisis,
- Communicates to the community and beyond that climate change is a priority,
- Demonstrates that Arnprior residents can look to their town for guidance in their own strategies to adapt or mitigate climate change,
- Gives the town and it’s residents the gift of taking action now instead of waiting for provincial or federal mandates.

What would a committee for climate change considerations do?
A committee for climate considerations would;

- Development new policy and procedure related to climate considerations,
- Hold council accountable for GHG emission reduction targets,
- Advise on actions the town can take to reduce GHG emissions,
- Promote community outreach, engagement and education around behavioural changes and energy efficiency,
- Identify grants, funding and investment opportunities for green initiatives.
