On Tuesday, the day before the Fast of Esther over 50 prominent Rabbis from across Israel ascended the Temple Mount in coordination with the Israeli Police. This yearly event is yet a further sign that the Temple Mount is once again returning to the forefront of Rabbinic concern, 1,949 years after the destruction of the Holy Temple. The rabbinic visit came amidst a busy week, which saw the ascent of a total of 485 religious Jews. Nearly 12,000 religious Jews have made a pilgrimage to the Temple Mount since Rosh Hashana.
The United Temple Mount Movement representing 29 groups and organizations dedicated to restoring Jewish Prayer and the Priestly service on the Mount reacted with joy to the event noting: "This ascent represents the broad consensus within Religious-Zionism."
The ascent lasted nearly three hours, while the police turned a blind eye as the Rabbis gave discourses on Torah topics related to the Temple Service and prayed for the complete redemption of the Jewish People and the restoration of the Temple. The police usually do not allow Jewish-religious groups to remain on the Mount for more than 20-30 minutes and are quick to remove any Jew found either praying or studying Torah from the Mount. The police apparently put on a show for the honored guests.
The Rabbi of the town of Kedumim, Rabbi Daniel Shilo stated: "The Temple Mount is in danger of being forgotten and this is 'the place that G-d has chosen'... to walk in His courtyard is a great and awesome thing."
Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, who heads the Temple Institute added, "There is no doubt that this ascent of Rabbis of Israel to the Temple Mount awakens joy in the upper world. The Divine Presence, which dwells in this place is waiting for us."
Moreover, Rabbi Avraham Oren of the Mekor Chaim Yeshiva, quoted his late grandfather, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein saying: "Rabbi Feinstein said the holier the place, the more important it is more important to be there... it is permitted to ascend the 'permitted areas' of the Temple Mount in accordance with the ruling of Maimonides and there is nothing forbidden in this."
Upon the conclusion of the visit, the rabbinic group met with the Police Commander of the Old City Chaim Shmuli in the Machkeme Police station attached the Temple Mount, to discuss the status of Jews on the Mount. The Commander blessed the Rabbis for their work stating: "To see the sight of Jews ascending the Temple Mount is truly amazing, I believe we have taken significant steps with what is happening on the Temple Mount."
It is more important than ever to join the call for Jewish Prayer on the Temple Mount - please sign and share our petition.
