Dear Jews worldwide. Tonight, we begin the day 24 hour day of mourning over the destruction of the Temple by fasting and eulogizing over it. In the 19th Century, Rav Shmuel Mohliver suggested the possibility of rebuilding the Temple and he requested a letter of approbation from R. Yehoshua of Kutna. R. Yehoshua, however, responded that rebuilding the Temple at that time would serve no purpose; in any event, the vast majority of the Jewish people had no interested in offering sacrifices. R. Mohliver replied that a minority can bring the public sacrifices on behalf of the entire nation, and sacrifices could thus be offered even if the majority of Jews were uninterested. The Klei Chemda ,a student of R. Yehoshua of Kutna, wrote that R. Mohliver's response did not address the Rav of Kutna's contention. The Rav of Kutna meant that if most of the nation has no interest in offering sacrifices, then there is no possibility of offering on their behalf. The sacrifices have no meaning or purpose if the people on whose behalf they are offered are not ready for it. The Klei Chemda thus concluded by claiming that rebuilding the Temple would not solve anything if the people were not ready for it; the Temple has no significance until the people show an interest in it. There is a long history of attempts to awaken the Jewish People to the necessity of the renewal of the Temple service ,but each attempt failed because the masses and the majority of the leadership were not ready. 1. Rebbe Akiva Eiger ztl requested of his son in law the Chatam Sofer to request permission from the Sultan of Turkey permission to bring the Passover Offering. The Chatam Sofer replied that the Sultan would not allow. 2. Rav Tzvi Hirch Kalisher wrote the famous book Drishat Tzion in support of the renewal of the public sacrifices and even sent letters to Rothschild and Montefiore to try to buy the Temple Mount from the Turks, but the letters went unanswered. 3. HaRav Yechiel Michael Turkinsky who wrote "Luach Eeret Yisrael" used universally in Israel, also wrote a Sefer called Ir Hakodesh vHamikdash "where he writes about the restoration of the sacrifices in our times. 4 The Maharitz ztl (Yichya Tzalach) - The great Rabbi of Yemen wrote that there is no reason not to bring sacrifices after building a alter in its proper place (ie. on the Temple Mount. 5 The Chazon Ish ztl wrote that once we have the permission of the authorities we must bring the Passover sacrifice. 6. Rav Elyashiv ztl had a conversation in 1967 about the restoration of Passover Sacrifice with HaRav Noach Zimbalist, Rav Elyashiv told him in no uncertain words that every problem in regard to the sacrifice could be found, however, we cannot bring to because there is no public who wanted it. We must wake up the people first. 7. Former Sephardic Chief Rabbi, HaRav Mordechai Eliyahu z"tl issued 4 letters on the topic of ascent to the Temple Mount and urged Rav Elboim to continue his work. The Movement for Temple Renewal - המקדש לכינון התנועה has been leading the effort for the last 40 years to wake up the Jewish People from their deep slumber over this critical issue and slow and steady progress has been made. The Elboim family were the first to begin re-creating Temple vesels, ,sowing priestly clothing and training priest for duty, public Passover sacrafice training courses and of course brining Jews to the Temple Mount. The Prophet Isaiah prophesizes: “And I will bring them to My Holy Mountain, and will make them happy in My house of prayer, their burnt offering and sacrifices will be welcome on My altar, for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations “(56:7) I heard from the great Sage, Rabbi Yosef Elboim of Jerusalem, who is a leading Rabbi for issues relating to the Temple Mount and the Temple a beautiful explanation of this verse. The Rabbi explained to me that found within this verse are four stages of the redemption of the Temple Mount. 1. “And I will bring them to My Holy Mountain” – The first stage is for the Jewish People to simply gather on the Temple Mount. Maimonides, Laws of the Chosen House chapter 7:7 “Even though the Temple is today destroyed…we should only enter into the areas (of the Temple Mount) that are permitted” 2. “And will make them happy in My house of prayer” – The second stage is for the Jewish People to renew Jewish Prayer to the Temple Mount. Maimonides, Book of Commandments Command 5: “The 5th Commandment is to serve God…this is the commandment to pray …Serve Him through His Torah and Serve Him in His Temple, One should pray within the Temple or towards it” 3. “Their burnt offering and sacrifices will be welcome on My altar” – The Third Stage is the reconstruction of the Altar without the standing Temple and the re-institution of national sacrifices. Maimonides, Laws of the Chosen House chapter 6:15: Therefore we sacrifice all sacrifices, even though the Temple is not standing” 4. “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations” – The process culminates with the rebuilding of the Holy Temple, thus allowing all humanity to unit in worshiping the one true God. Maimonides, Laws of the Chosen House Chapter 1:1: “It is a positive commandment to build a House for God, for the sake of offering sacrifices and rejoicing in it three times a year – as it says “Build for Me a Temple" (exodus: 25:8). Just like the State of Israel was built with the help of the Almighty via active and political Zionism and did not fall down from the sky; The Temple will also not fall from the sky, and we must be as active and political as possible, until we are able to complete the building of the Temple.
