I am a first-year student living with The Student Housing Company, Austen House in Southampton. Despite the company name, it has done nothing to support students from up and down the country who were living with them, those who have had to move back home, fly to their home countries or those living there due to being unable to go back to their families. I, among many others, have emailed and posted on social media asking for an explanation of what The Student Housing Company are doing to support the students in situations mentioned above, in which we have received a unanimous response of "you must still pay your full amount of rent for the final semester. This is absurd considering that Southampton Solent University, The University of Southampton an many other private accommodation companies have been compassionate with students and allowed them to not pay their final instalment. I and many other tennents from Liverpool, Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Lincoln, Newcastle, London, Exeter and Lancaster are now faced with paying for an empty room which we are unable to return to for the foreseeable future. I am hoping that others can understand the situation we are stuck in and that The Student Housing Company will consider fairness over money from students who struggle financially as it is.
