Demand the Santa Clarita City Council stop criminalization of street vendors

The Issue

The City of Santa Clarita's 2019 Draft Legislative Platform has a new addition:

"22. Oppose legislation that seeks to limit or eliminate municipal authority to regulate street or sidewalk vendors."

This means that they're going to continue formal opposition measures such as SB 946, a bill which legalized street vending throughout the state.

In addition, the city council will be voting on an amendment to the city code which would technically change the code to comply with SB 946, but also enact new, further restrictions on street vending such as requiring all street vendors to hold three permits, one of which costs upward of about $400. The first reading of this new amendment will take place on Tuesday, November 27th.

Our Revolution SCV and DSA SCV created this petition to let our local representatives know that this is an unjust decision. Criminalizing street and sidewalk vendors hurts low income communities, especially Latinx and immigrant families simply trying to get by. Their proposed agenda and city ordinance amendments make it clear that they will continue to resist truly and wholly decriminalizing street vending.

Please spread this petition to others! We also urge you to attend the next city council meeting at 5 pm on Tuesday, November 27th, so we can voice our concerns during the public comment section.
