The Road to Freedom: A Fight Against Unfair Fines

The Road to Freedom: A Fight Against Unfair Fines
The Issue
My name is Pouria, and I’m a British citizen who believes in the fundamental right to travel freely on the roads I help build with my taxes. But lately, it feels like the councils of London Hammersmith and Fulham, Camden, and beyond are turning these public highways into profit traps, stripping away our liberties one fine at a time. This is my story, and I’m asking you to join me in reclaiming our freedom.
It all started when I received a Penalty Charge Notice PCN from Hammersmith and Fulham. The charge? Failing to comply with a restriction on certain types of vehicles. I was driving my personal car through a public road, one funded by my hard earned taxes, when I was slapped with a fine. Their rule? Only residents of Hammersmith and Fulham could pass. I couldn’t believe it. As a taxpayer from Kensington and Chelsea, I was being told I had no right to use a road that belongs to all of us. It felt illegal, a blatant violation of the common law I’d grown up trusting the right to pass and repass on public highways, a principle dating back centuries.
I sat down and penned a letter to the council, my frustration pouring onto the page. I argued that this wasn’t just about me it was about every citizen. Imagine if Kensington and Chelsea did the same, I wrote, penalizing anyone but their residents. Where would our freedom of movement stand? I demanded answers: Does the common law right to travel still exist? Why should I pay a fee to use a road built with taxpayer money, not covered by any statute like the Road Traffic Act? Are they trying to strip away our rights? I warned them I’d take this to court and publicize it if they didn’t cancel the fine. To my relief, they backed down. The PCN was cancelled, a small victory for common sense.
But the fight wasn’t over. Just months later, on April 25 2025, I faced a similar trap in Camden. Turning left into Bedford Square, I had no warning no no left turn sign, just a high mounted no motor vehicles notice I couldn’t see until it was too late. The fine? 80, with a rejection on July 18 2025, citing school safety near a university with a 20mph zone already in place. Another cash grab, disguised as policy, on a road I help maintain. Life’s hard enough why are they taxing us over and over, thinking we’re okay with it? I’m not okay with this.
This isn’t just about my fines. It’s about a system where councils profit from unclear rules, turning our public roads into private tollways. I’ve challenged Camden again, demanding they cancel this PCN and provide their Traffic Management Order. I’ve written to my MP, hoping to raise this in the House of Commons, and now I’m here, launching a petition on Change.org. I want to abolish these unfair policies across London, ensuring our freedom of movement through public roads without paying fees or facing penalties.
Join me. Sign this petition to demand the Mayor of London and borough councils end this overreach. Share your stories of being fined unfairly. Together, we can turn the tide and reclaim the roads that belong to us all. My freedom and yours is nonnegotiable.
