The Right of Return: Grant Citizenship to the African Diaspora Now

The Issue

To the African Union and All African Heads of State:

We, the global African diaspora; descendants of those stolen from our homeland during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, demand our legal right to return, resettle, and reclaim our status in Africa.

For over 400 years, more than 12 million Africans were forcibly taken from their lands. Today, over 200 million descendants remain exiled, disconnected from our roots yet bound by blood to this continent. While nations like Israel (Law of Return) and Benin (recent Citizenship Law for Afro-descendants) recognize the rights of their scattered people, the broader continent still denies this basic right to its stolen children.

OUR DEMAND:

We call on the African Union to operationalize the "6th Region" by enforcing three specific policies:

The Right of Abode: Establish a continental visa protocol allowing members of the Diaspora to live and work indefinitely without punitive renewal fees.

Path to Citizenship: Create a streamlined naturalization process for descendants of enslaved Africans, removing the bureaucratic barriers that treat us as strangers.

Economic Liberty: Grant the Diaspora the unrestricted legal right to live, work, and operate enterprises, removing the "foreigner" classifications that currently block us from purchasing land or building businesses under Agenda 2063.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Justice: This is not charity—it is restorative justice. Our ancestors built empires abroad while enslaved. We deserve the right to rebuild at home.
Economic Sovereignty: The diaspora sends $95 billion annually in remittances to Africa. Imagine our impact as residents and tax-paying citizens, not just visitors.

Global Leadership: Africa can set a historic precedent for human rights, surpassing empty apologies with concrete policy.

PRECEDENTS PROVE IT IS POSSIBLE:

Benin: Recently passed legislation granting citizenship to Afro-descendants, proving legal repatriation is possible.
Ghana: The "Year of Return" (2019) generated over $1.9 billion in economic activity, proving the Diaspora is an asset.
Sierra Leone: Grants citizenship based on DNA evidence of lineage.

A PERSONAL PLEA:

"When I stood in the Great Rift Valley looking at Mount Longonot, I heard my ancestors whisper, ‘Come home.’ But without citizenship, I could only visit, not stay. Millions share this pain." Julius Nyerere, Director, CRDEA

THE CALL TO ACTION:

We refuse to be exiled forever.
