Request for the Resignation of Laura Blackwell from the CCS School Board

Request for the Resignation of Laura Blackwell from the CCS School Board
The Issue
We ask for the resignation of Laura Blackwell from the Cabarrus County School Board.
As Cabarrus County educators, we were beyond appalled at some of the behavior witnessed during the Virtual Board meeting. Decorum and etiquette that many of us instill in our children and have worked to instill virtually in our classrooms were seemingly tossed to the wayside. The culmination of our disgust was the use of the “R-word” by Laura Blackwell, a member of the School Board (audio file found here: https://soundcloud.com/user-754797769/cabarrushotmic?ref=clipboard&p=a&c=0
To say that we were upset would be an understatement. As educators, we are shaken that “leaders” of one of the most innovative, progressive, and educationally effective districts in our state can use that language. To compound this issue, the use of that word was explained away as a product of frustration.
The words that came out weren’t a mistake. They were words used before, words that exist in that home, in the mind, and in the heart of that person. That person who is trusted to make fair, equitable decisions on the education and well-being for ALL students. This person has shamed everyone associated with Cabarrus County School. That word would NEVER be used by empathetic, educated, caring, supportive individuals. It is a word rooted in hate, and perpetuated by ignorance. It has NO place in a civilized society, let alone the world we are molding and shaping for our future generations. It has no place in Cabarrus County. None.
That word was said in a professional setting. An educational setting. That word, one that I can’t even bring myself to type as a reference, more than anything, made us feel sorry. Sorry for the students that are represented and “supported” by this School Board, and sorry for the teachers and staff of Cabarrus County left to the ideological choices of individuals that include in their own vernacular abhorrent, divisive, and hurtful language.
We are PROUD Cabarrus County Schools employees. We continue to be proud champions for the amazing students we teach and represent, and the faculty and staff who support and love them. But today, we are ashamed. We are hurt for our students, for our communities, and for the County we love. We are BETTER than this. Our schools deserve. Our communities deserve better. And our students deserve better.
We ask for the resignation of Laura Blackwell from the Cabarrus County School Board.
