I am Tamanna Ferdous, a creative writer moved by the plight of those housed within the Guantánamo Bay detention camp. With a personal history interwoven with the difficult narratives of division and displacement, especially owing to the greater India Partition, I see how disturbingly echoic the situations are. As someone who has brushes with untold stories of borders and division, this issue isn't alien to me. It’s about recognizing communal issues and global concerns; it's about asserting strongly, "You are not alone."

This petition addresses an overdue action item: the closure of the Guantánamo Bay detention camp. The camp has been universally criticized for its harsh treatment of detainees and for operating outside the protection of the U.S. judiciary. A commitment was made in the Qatar speech, yet, we still await its fulfilment.

We are in the 21st century where "syncretism" should be more than a mere word. It should be a harmonious acceptance of different cultures, peaceful intermingling, not seclusion and division. The closure of Guantánamo Bay is integral to this vision of fostering global unity and respect for human rights.

Let’s call upon the responsible authorities to uphold the promise made during the Qatar speech and seize this opportunity for justice, human rights safeguarding, and global unity. Sign this petition to put an end to Guantánamo Bay, a symbol of pain and prototype of division, and make "syncretism" more than just a word in the dictionary.
