Madura Kaliyamman Koil in Thottiyam near Musiri in Trichy district has been conducting a gory festival similar to Gadhimai in Nepal where they sacrifice buffalo calves and cows every year.

We, Indian Center for Animal Rights and Education(INCARE), a Chennai based animal welfare organization, filed a writ petition in March 2015 at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to stop this.

In a landmark judgment, the Court has ordered that the sacrifices should not be permitted to be conducted. This is an important legal milestone that sets a precedent to stop such brutality from occurring anywhere in India, for any religion. 

The local police in Thottiyam colluded with the locals to and turned the other way while the sacrifices happened in this specific case, but such cruel and violent murder of animals has long been conducted under the excuse of religion - this judgment from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court will now be useful to stop such barbarism across the country. We request all Animal Welfare organizations to spread the awareness about this judgment and use it to stop such barbarity across India for all religions and belief systems alike.

We request the Hon'ble Prime Minister of the Indian Government to pass a law that institutionalizes the essence of this judgment into our penal code so that such practices are brought to an end and millions of innocent young lives saved. We also request the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the Collector of Trichy to take notice and ensure that the State Police enforce the Court's direction fully and stop the butchering of hundreds of young calves.

Sacrifice in its essence is giving up of what is ours. Taking away the lives of other beings is murder. Let's educate people, liberate the animals and make humans more humane!
