In Defence of Pigeons by Dr Steve Portugal of London University
The article, “In Defence of Pigeons”, by Dr Steve Portugal of Royal Holloway College, London University, describes the tragic plight of pigeons today - a direct consequence of the spiteful media campaign against them, which began in 2001, when they were banned from Trafalgar Square by the London mayor, a notorious pigeon hater. Cruelty to pigeons began then. It persists to this day.

Please contact anyone in the media with the power to stop the cruelty, and share this petition widely.
Pigeons are beautiful birds, gentle and highly intelligent. They are our messengers and lifesavers of war, who were awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal no less than 32 times for their outstanding wartime service and bravery. Why should they be singled out for abuse and excluded from being fed?
Notices banning pigeon feeding are threatening and unfair, and make the abuse of these wonderful birds worse.
Whatever has happened to our Nation Of Animal Lovers, that the Wildlife and Countryside Act, of 1981, which is there to protect all wild birds, including pigeons, from abuse, is not enforced - and pigeon abuse is ignored by everyone with the power to stop it?
Pigeon droppings, or guano are an excellent source of fertiliser, highly prized by organic farmers and gardeners today. Pigeon houses were once guarded because of this valuable resource.
One day, the persecution of pigeons will be effectively outlawed and stopped and The Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, which “protects” all wild birds including pigeons, from abuse, will be properly enforced to protect them.
Pigeon abuse is Speciesism, the animal equivalent of racism. It is incredibly cruel. Children should never be taught to hate and abuse pigeons. They are being taught that abusing defenceless creatures is acceptable!
Please ask your MP to call for a debate about pigeon abuse. We need to break the silence on this cruelty. It has gone on for far too long.
There is never any justification for abuse.
We must become a Nation of Animal Lovers again.
