Pigeon abuse is animal abuse. It leads to further abuse of vulnerable animals and people, and causes deep distress to those who care about them and their welfare. Quite simply, it should not be happening in today’s enlightened world.
Pigeons urgently need protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, whereby it is an offence to harm any wild bird, including pigeons. This act is not currently being enforced.
Please ask your MP to get the Wildlife and Countryside Act enforced, so that pigeons are properly protected by law. There is no justification for the cruelty towards them. The U.K. is known internationally as a Nation of Animal Lovers. It must live up to that reputation, in the eyes of the world.
At this time of year, we remember with gratitude the courageous pigeons who saved thousands of human lives during both World Wars, as vital messengers. Pigeons served alongside the armed forces, and were carried on ships, planes and submarines. They brought rescue and hope to people in situations of great danger, when all other communication had failed. They conveyed secret information from agents in occupied Europe, as part of Operation Columba, and their fantastic reconnaissance skills enabled the D Day landings of June 1944 to take place. We owe pigeons an enormous debt of gratitude for all that they did in helping to save our nation during its darkest hour.
Pigeons’ heroism as our messengers of war must never be forgotten. It must be made widely known, and the public must be educated about the vital role that pigeons played, in order to stem the tide of violence and cruelty towards them.

The article, “In Defence of Pigeons”, by Dr Steve Portugal, Reader of Royal Holloway College, describes the plight of pigeons today. This is a direct consequence of the spiteful media campaign against them, which began in 2001, and persists to this day.
