Stop the abuse of pigeons, our forgotten heroes of war.

Pigeons’ vital contribution, as messengers and lifesavers of both World Wars, must never be forgotten.  32 carrier pigeons were awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for their outstanding wartime service and bravery.

Pigeons were trained to fly by night and could reach speeds of 60mph.  Flying under enemy fire, they carried messages on their legs and brought rescue to thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen.  Pigeons’ reconnaissance skills also helped enable the D Day landings to happen.

Today, pigeons are relentlessly persecuted in parks and public places.  Their wartime heroism is hidden from public knowledge.

Pigeons need protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.  Under the Act, it is an offence to harm any wild bird, including pigeons.  Nevertheless, this Act is not being enforced.

Please ask your MP to help get the Wildlife and Countryside Act enforced, so that all wild birds, including pigeons, are effectively  protected from abuse.

Read “In Defence of Pigeons” by Dr Steve Portugal of Royal Holloway College, which describes the plight of pigeons today.

Persecution of pigeons is incredibly cruel.  It must become something that nobody does any longer.

Thank you very much.
