Respect for pigeons, instead of abuse, must begin at home and in school
Respect for pigeons must begin by -
- Re-educating children at home and at school, to respect pigeons, and all creatures. They were created by God and are fantastic, beautiful beings.
Action - parents, adults and teachers.
- Recognising pigeons, as Sentient Beings, and giving them full, specific protection under the Animal Welfare Sentience laws and Action Plan for Animal Welfare.

Prince William and Kate launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to “drive awareness of, and action on, the extraordinary impact of the early years, changing what we think and do on early childhood, in order to transform society for generations to come.”

1. Please ask the Royal Foundation Centre to teach children to be kind to pigeons. If they can’t do this, who can? What we teach children in the early years stays with them. These early years are so important.

2. Ask the Prime Minister to respond to our petition, and keep his promise, made on Holocaust Memorial Day, to the House of Commons, to “fight against ALL forms of hatred and prejudice, wherever they are found”, by outlawing pigeon abuse and giving pigeons specific protection under the law.

Please respond to our petition to “Stop the Abuse of Pigeons in Parks, gardens and streets and protect pigeons by law”, sent to you on 21 September.
Please keep your promise, made to the House of Commons on Holocaust Memorial Day, to “fight against all forms of hatred and prejudice, wherever they are found” by outlawing and stopping pigeon abuse in parks and public places, and giving pigeons full, specific protection under the Animal Welfare Sentience laws and Action Plan for Animal Welfare.

Carrier pigeons saved thousands of lives in wartime, as messengers. 32 pigeons won the PDSA Dickin Medal, in recognition of their outstanding service and sacrifice.
During World War II, pigeons were carried on planes, ships and submarines and if a vessel came under attack, a pigeon would be sent out to seek help, with a message attached to its leg. Risking their own lives, pigeons saved the lives of stranded soldiers, sailors, airmen, and civilians. Trained to fly by night, they could reach speeds of a mile a minute.
In Italy, Pigeon GI Joe flew with a message, which saved an entire town from being bombed.
Over 60 animals received the Dickin Medal, including 18 dogs, three horses and one cat. But pigeons still rule, with 32 being awarded medals, between 1943 and 1949.

7. Read the book, “Pigeon Hero” by Shirley Raye Redmond, which tells the true story of how WW2 pigeon GI Joe saved a whole town in Italy from being bombed, by flying with a message attached to his leg. This book, written for children, is beautifully illustrated and presented.
8. As Remembrance Sunday approaches, please ask the Royal British Legion to honour and celebrate pigeons’ heroic wartime role in their annual Remembrance Commemorations. This would give pigeons a far better public image, and might help stop the cruelty towards them.

9. Please ask the RSPCA to educate children to be kind to pigeons and never to harm or abuse them. The RSPCA are currently planning a programme of education for school children about animal welfare, and it is important that respect for pigeons is strongly emphasised in this initiative. Thank you very much. We must break through the “wall of silence” surrounding pigeon abuse. We live in a democracy and our MPs are there to serve the public. Their role is to represent us and champion our concerns in Parliament. They must not ignore us.
