The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey: Stop shooting Snowy Owls and other birds at New York Airports
The Issue
It started with Canada geese, now it has been reported by the New York Daily News that the Port Authority’s “wildlife specialists” have been exterminating snowy owls, killing at least three at JFK Airport with a shotgun.
The continued inhumane and ineffective killing of birds in the name of air safety is indefensible. The lethal approaches are haphazard, lack scientific merit, and the public has been completely left out of the decisionmaking process. There are clearly other effective methods for managing these birds that are being ignored. Airports like Boston's Logan International have a fantastic and successful history of trapping and re-releasing these magnificent animals away from the dangers of the airport. This practice must be stopped immediately. We petition the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to seek other proven non-lethal methods for ensuring the safety of air traffic and the Snowy Owl.
Snowy Owls travel thousands of miles south each winter from the Canadian tundra where they spend the spring and summer. The snowy white owls that bird watchers were thrilled to see recently around New York City might be dead now.
