The Issue

For generations, Pluto has been a cherished member of our solar system, recognized as the ninth planet ever since its discovery in 1930. However, in 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) made the controversial decision to reclassify Pluto as a "dwarf planet," igniting debates among scientists, educators, and planetary enthusiasts alike.

The IAU's decision was based on the criteria that a planet must "clear the neighborhood" around its orbit, a condition Pluto does not meet due to its eccentric and tilted orbit, which is shared with other Kuiper Belt objects. Critics argue that this definition is not only arbitrary but also excludes other celestial bodies that many see as planets.

Even more, when the IAU voted Pluto as a dwarf planet, only 424 members were present. There are 10,000 members in the IAU. On top of that, only 237 of the people. Barley half of them.

Pluto is more than just a celestial object; it holds cultural and educational significance. For decades, it has been a staple of science textbooks, inspiring curiosity and wonder in students around the world. Its demotion has confused many young learners and stifled interest in the fascinating complexities of our solar system. Restoring Pluto's planetary status would rekindle interest in space exploration and allow educators to teach a more inclusive and engaging narrative of our universe.

Furthermore, scientific reconnaissance of Pluto by NASA's New Horizons mission in 2015 revealed a dynamic world with mountains, glaciers, and a possible subsurface ocean, demonstrating that Pluto is far from being a mere constellation of ice and rock. It is an active body worthy of being recognized alongside the other planets of our solar system.

We urge the IAU to revisit their criteria and consider a more comprehensive definition that encompasses the diverse characteristics of celestial bodies like Pluto. Let's restore Pluto's status as a planet and honor its place in the cosmic tapestry of our solar system.

Please sign this petition to encourage the IAU to reconsider their classification of Pluto. Together, we can make a case for its rightful status as a planet.
