Federal Recognition For Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians

Federal Recognition For Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians
The Issue
Located in San Fernando, California, the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians are still to this day not federally recognized by the government. This means that their land is not federally protected and they do not receive government aid. Treaties were signed that were never honored by the US government.
"Against all odds, our Tribe survived enslavement at Mission San Fernando in the Spanish period, land loss and displacement in the Mexican period, and state and federally funded killings of Native people in the American period. Against all odds, our tribe maintained its inherent governance, and continues to thrive even without a land base. Our pursuit of federal acknowledgment is the oldest social justice issue to occur on these lands." (Tribal President, Rudy Ortega Jr.)
Help me get this petition started and keep it ongoing so I can send the results of this to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and hopefully help get the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians federally recognized.
