Joe Ciardullo (who is running for Congress this November in NY) helped us deliver the petition to Cuomo back in June. He’s a huge supporter of restoring the name and he just released this statement:
What’s in a name?
The new bridge over the Hudson river that connects both counties in the 17th congressional district IS and ALWAYS will be called the Tappan Zee Bridge. I was against the name change for many reasons. First, it’s part of the culture and history of the area. Second, we need to stop naming buildings, bridges and structures after politicians, there are much better deserving people. Third, the taxpayers who have to pay for the bridge, should have input into any name changes.
Just like the name change that no one wanted, we have no plan on how to pay for the bridge, no idea how high the tolls are and have received ZERO federal funding for the bridge. I’m running for Congress in the 17th district and I will fight to get federal funding for the bridge, with a caveat that the name be decided by the voters and taxpayers. I helped deliver the 110,000 signature petition and feel that we deserve a say into any name change.
