It's happening!

The Great South Bay Greenway plans have been formally introduced by County Executive Steve Bellone and enthusiastically endorsed by the Chairman of the State Senate Transportation Committee, Tim Kennedy (Buffalo). The plans call for the greenway to begin at Gardiner Park in Islip and extend over the Robert Moses Causeway and link up to the Ocean Parkway path that runs the length of Jones Beach Island.  The completed trail with its existing western terminus in Wantagh, will be one of the nation's premier bike loops and attract non-automobile tourism to Long Island. Senator Kennedy came all the way from Buffalo to voice his support for this project AND the eventual extension of the Empire State Trail to Long Island.  County Executive Bellone gave a passionate speech about how essential alternative transportation is for evolving the lifestyle and image of Suffolk County and I truly believe he is sincere.

Yes, that's me at the podium explaining the potential of bicycle tourism for Long Island and trying to keep the drums beating for more cycling infrastructure on Long Island.  Your signatures have made a difference, but the more grass roots involvement we can muster, the louder our voice becomes. The next step is to get the State Department of Transportation to start construction, and that usually happens primarily as a result of public pressure.

Please re-share the petition, and if you can, call your state legislature and voice your support.  Let’s get this project rolling together!
