When I first asked you for your help with this project, to be honest, it was an uphill climb. However, we have now crested the hill and need just a little more energy to get us rolling rapidly down. So let me give you some updates:
On Monday, July 12th, the Newsday Editorial board came out with a full endorsement for building the Great South Bay Greenway to Captree State Park (Robert Moses Causeway Bikeway). That endorsement alone would have been epic, but Newsday went the extra mile by enthusiastically supporting the Suffolk County Hike and Bike task force’s master plan of extending the Empire State Trail to Long Island. Newsday basically consolidated the Op-ed pieces of Hal Tarry (4/26/21) and Martin Buchman (1/14/20) in citing reasons for their support of cycling infrastructure. I encourage you to google those op-ed pieces so that you can be better informed on how transformational cycling infrastructure will be.
I recently sent meeting requests to all of the Suffolk County state delegation and to members of the transportation committee. I have spoken to State Assembly members Stern (10th district) and Englebright (4th District) who are in full support of the project. I have been in contact with State Senate transportation committee chair Tim Kennedy and also have a meeting with State Senator Gaughran on July 20th. And yes, I am putting in a lot of time on this, so I just need a little more help. Please contact your state legislator in support of this project and try to help me get more signatures on the petition. If you haven’t shared this with your family and friends, please do!
See you on the trail.
This is going to happen. This is really going to happen, and it’s going to be awesome!
Thank you again!
